Dear NPA community,
And just like that, another year in the books for the Network of Politicized Adoptees (NPA)! As the calendar year comes to a close, we welcome the opportunity for reflection on the ways we’ve shown up for each other and the broader adoptee community.

Our 2023 Highlights
- We made intentional time for joy, dreaming, and some unforgettable food during our winter and summer 2023 Steering Committee Retreats.
- We invited special guests JaeRan Kim and Grace Newton, two of the co-authors of the paper “Out of the Fog and into Consciousness: A Model of Adoptee Awareness,” to lead a political education session for our steering committee and helped spread this helpful resource with our network.
- We celebrated the victory of the Supreme Court upholding the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA).
- We led a workshop on “Defining Generations: Individual and Cultural Adoptee Identity” at KAAN 2023 in Chicago.
- We attended and helped spread the word on a number of fantastic community events including “Our Ancestors Are Us: An Asian Adoptee Life Writing Workshop” facilitated by Lee Herrick and Jennifer Kwon Dobbs 허수진 and the book launch of When We Become Ours: A Young Adult Adoptee Anthology edited by Shannon Gibney and Nicole Chung and the book launch of The Girl I Am, Was, and Never Will Be: A Speculative Memoir of Transracial Adoption by Shannon Gibney.
- We leaned into our values and released a statement in support of Palestinian liberation and self-determination. Our fight for Palestinian liberation and adoptee justice are bound together.
This year, we continued to support each other on the steering committee through major life events – half the steering committee are in grad school, one of us moved, one of us had a baby and became a mom to her first-known biological relative, one of us competed and won an award in a bodybuilding competition. We are inspired by each other and also make sure our work together gives us the space to grow individually. Continuing to develop our relationships is important to us and something we’re happy to model for other groups.
Looking Forward to 2024
- We are so excited to bring our capstone storytelling event back in the new year. Save the date of Saturday, March 16th for our event, taking place in-person in the Twin Cities. Our NPA steering committee member, Julia Gay, will be the artist working with each of our storytellers for our third iteration of this event. More to come about our storytellers!
- We’ll see you at KAAN 2024 in Chicago again. Stay tuned for more on the fun session we have in store!
Support our work!
We already have some exciting plans for the new year! We’re looking forward to being a resource and space for the broader adoptee community to come together. Please consider supporting our work in the new year by donating to NPA. You can donate directly to NPA through our Venmo account. Please reach out to us if you would like to donate but need an alternative method to do so. As an organization that is not a nonprofit or fiscally sponsored and made up of all volunteers, we rely solely on individual donations. Another way to give is to buy one of a limited number of NPA t-shirts.
We hope that you find rest and laughter this holiday and Winter Solstice season. As we look to the next year, let us know how you’d like to be more involved with our work.
